The highly anticipated Yangwang U7, BYD’s luxury sedan, has officially rolled off the production line in China, signaling the imminent arrival of this four-motor powerhouse to customers. With pre-sales starting in November 2024 and an official launch in late March 2025, the U7 is now ready for deliveries.
This isn’t just another sedan. The Yangwang U7 is designed to go head-to-head with established luxury players like the Mercedes-Benz S-Class, BMW 7 Series, and Audi A8L. Its starting price of 628,000 yuan (approximately 87,150 USD) firmly places it in the premium segment.
What makes the Yangwang U7 a true contender?
BYD’s luxury brand, Yangwang, recently showcased the first batch of mass-produced U7s, specifically the all-electric variant. You can spot these EVs by their distinctive front bumper with a single air intake.
These initial models sport a crisp white exterior, 21-inch multi-spoke rims, and traditional side-view mirrors. And for those keen on cutting-edge tech, every car comes equipped with a LiDAR sensor perched on the roof, hinting at advanced driver-assistance capabilities. Inside, the luxury continues with a stylish white interior.
Power and Performance: Undeniably Electric
Underneath that sleek exterior, the Yangwang U7 EV is a performance beast. It’s slightly more compact than its plug-in hybrid sibling, measuring 5265mm long, 1998mm wide, and 1517mm tall, with a wheelbase stretching 3,160mm. But make no mistake, this car means business.
It boasts four electric motors that collectively unleash a staggering 960 kW (1,287 hp). That kind of power propels the U7 from 0 to 100 km/h in a mere 2.9 seconds, with a top speed of 270 km/h. Plus, with a substantial 135.5 kWh battery, the Yangwang U7 EV delivers an impressive range of up to 720 km under CLTC conditions.
Plug-in Hybrid Option: Blending Power with Extended Range
For those who prefer the flexibility of a hybrid, the Yangwang U7 also comes in a plug-in hybrid (PHEV) variant. This version is a tad larger, with dimensions of 5360mm long, 2000mm wide, and 1515mm tall, and a 3,200mm wheelbase. It shares the same potent electric motors but adds a 2-liter turbocharged internal combustion engine that contributes an extra 200 kW (268 hp).
Equipped with a 52.4 kWh battery, the PHEV offers an electric-only range of 200 km. But thanks to a generous 60-liter fuel tank, its combined range extends beyond 1,000 km, offering serious long-distance touring capability.
A Cabin Built for Comfort and Tech
The U7’s interior is a showcase of modern luxury, available in both four- and five-seat configurations. Dominating the center console is a 12.8-inch OLED touchscreen, serving as the hub for infotainment and vehicle settings. Passengers aren’t left out, with a massive 23.6-inch front monitor. The driver gets a similar-sized instrument cluster, keeping all vital information front and center. Even rear passengers enjoy their own dual 12.8-inch screens, making every journey a first-class experience.
One of the U7’s coolest tricks is its rear-wheel steering, allowing the rear wheels to turn up to 20 degrees. This drastically shrinks the car’s minimum turning radius to just 4.85 meters, making this large luxury sedan surprisingly nimble in tight spots. Plus, it sports BYD’s Disus-Z suspension system, featuring magnetic suspension motors instead of traditional hydraulic dampers for a ride that’s both smooth and responsive.
The Yangwang U7’s Place in the Market
The Yangwang U7 is now available in China, with prices ranging from 628,000 to 708,000 yuan (around 87,150 to 98,250 USD). It marks Yangwang’s third venture into the luxury market, following the U8 SUV and the U9 sports car. While Yangwang saw a dip in sales earlier this year, delivering 659 units from January to April 2025, the U7 represents a significant opportunity for the brand to regain momentum against its formidable rivals.
With its blend of astonishing power, advanced technology, and luxurious appointments, the Yangwang U7 EV is poised to carve out its own space in the high-end sedan segment. BYD is definitely not pulling any punches here, bringing a serious challenger to the global luxury car stage and putting the established players on notice.
