China’s new energy vehicle, NEV, market showed remarkable dynamism in May 2025, with numerous automakers reporting robust year-on-year growth despite some monthly variations. BYD, the reigning champion, maintained its significant lead, while Geely, Leapmotor, and Xpeng saw their sales volumes double compared to May 2024. These rankings also highlight the escalating competition between traditional automakers, innovative startups, and rapidly emerging tech-backed brands.
BYD Continues to Lead the Charge
BYD sold an impressive 376,930 NEVs in May, reflecting a 14.1% increase year-on-year and a 1.2% rise from April. Their year-to-date sales have hit 1,735,643 vehicles, a substantial 37% jump over the first five months of 2024. The enduring popularity of BYD’s Dynasty and Ocean series models remains a cornerstone of the brand’s market dominance. BYD continues to expand its lineup, offering more accessible mid-range EVs with robust performance.
Geely Group’s Explosive Growth
The Geely Group delivered 138,021 NEVs in May, a staggering 135.2% increase year-on-year and 9.9% up from April. The Galaxy series alone contributed 101,845 units, Lynk & Co added 17,268 units, and Zeekr brought in 18,908. Cumulatively, the group’s NEV sales have reached 602,784 units through May, marking a 137.1% year-on-year surge. Zeekr, while part of Geely, operates with its distinct brand identity and sales network.
Leapmotor’s Astonishing Ascent
Leapmotor saw 45,067 deliveries in May, up 148.1% from last year. By the end of May, their total deliveries for 2025 stood at 173,658 units, a massive 160.8% increase. Models like the C11 are clearly hitting the mark with consumers seeking advanced features and competitive pricing.
Huawei-Backed Harmony Intelligent Mobility Gains Traction
Harmony Intelligent Mobility, powered by Huawei, delivered 44,454 NEVs in May. Their Aito M9 led with 15,481 units, followed by the M8 at 12,116 units, the M5 Ultra at 4,889 units, and the M7 at 4,139 units. The Luxeed R7 added 5,124 units, and the recently launched Stelato S9 EREV contributed 2,000 units. Huawei’s influence in the EV market is steadily growing, with strategic collaborations propelling these brands forward.
Li Auto’s Consistent Growth
Li Auto reported 40,856 unit sales in May, a 16.7% year-on-year increase and a 20.4% rise from April. Their extended-range L series models continue to be a favorite among families. Cumulative sales for 2025 have reached 167,659 units, up 18.7% year-on-year.
Xpeng’s Impressive Leap
Xpeng delivered 33,525 vehicles in May, marking an exceptional 230.4% increase from the same month last year, despite a minor 4.3% dip from April. The X9 MPV was a strong performer, securing 3,327 units and maintaining its leadership in the premium electric MPV segment. Year-to-date deliveries have soared to 162,578 units, a 293.1% jump.
Great Wall Motor and Xiaomi’s Steady Progress
Great Wall Motor reported 32,638 NEV sales in May, a 32.1% increase year-on-year. Xiaomi mirrored its April performance with over 28,000 SU7 deliveries and plans to debut its second model, the YU7, later this year.
Mixed Results for Other NEV Players
GAC Aion saw 26,777 NEV deliveries in May, a 33.2% decline year-on-year. In contrast, Deepal achieved 25,521 units, up a solid 77.6%. Nio Group, encompassing Nio, Onvo, and Firefly, delivered 23,231 units, reaching a year-to-date total of 89,225 units, a 34.7% rise. Avatr nearly doubled its sales with 12,767 units in May, and Voyah posted 10,022 units, a substantial 121.7% increase year-on-year, showcasing the vibrant and competitive landscape of China’s NEV market.
