BYD’s 1,300-HP Yangwang U7 EV is Coming to Redefine Luxury Sedans

BYD’s premium brand, Yangwang, has officially circled March 27 on the calendar for the launch of its flagship electric sedan, the U7. This isn’t just another EV. It’s a million-yuan (around 138,400 USD) statement piece packed with staggering performance and technology, aimed squarely at the top tier of the luxury market.

The car is built on BYD’s advanced e4 platform and features a wild quad-motor setup, promising a new level of performance and control.

A Masterclass in Aerodynamics and Power

From the first look, the Yangwang U7 is aggressive. Its low, downward-pressing stance and signature headlights give it a clear family resemblance to its sibling, the U8 SUV. But this design isn’t just for show. Thanks to some clever aerodynamic work, the car slices through the air with a drag coefficient of just 0.195 Cd, a figure that rivals the most slippery cars on the planet. LiDAR sensors are seamlessly integrated into the roofline, hinting at the tech powerhouse underneath.

And what a powerhouse it is. The U7’s quad-motor setup delivers a total output of exceeding 1,300 horsepower. Each motor produces 240 kW and spins up to a dizzying 21,000 rpm. This translates to a 0-100 km/h sprint in a blistering 2.9 seconds. The sheer instant force of 1,584 Nm of torque is the kind of acceleration that pins you to your seat and re-calibrates what you thought was fast.

A Cockpit from the Future

Inside, the U7 continues the “Star Ring Cockpit” theme from the U8. The centerpiece is a stunning 12.8-inch curved OLED screen that seems to float in the dash. It runs on the latest DiLink system, powered by a 4nm chip, which means it’s ridiculously fast and responsive. Full-scenario voice assistance and an Augmented Reality Head-Up Display (AR-HUD) complete the futuristic feel, projecting vital information right onto the windshield.

This car is loaded with sensors. Armed with two Nvidia Orin-X chips, three long-range LiDARs, five millimeter-wave radars, and a dozen cameras, the U7 has a powerful digital brain for its L2+ advanced driver-assistance systems. It’s got a 360-degree view of its surroundings, making it one of the most aware vehicles on the road.

Charging and Range for the Real World

All of BYD’s high-end brand Yangwang vehicles use an 800V high-voltage platform, and the U7 is no exception. This architecture allows for mind-boggling charging speeds. With dual-gun fast charging, it can hit a peak of 500 kW, adding nearly 300 kilometers of range in just 10 minutes. The full EV version boasts a CLTC range of 720 kilometers.

For those not quite ready to go all-electric, Yangwang is also offering a U7 PHEV. This plug-in hybrid version uses a newly developed high-performance engine and offers a massive combined range of 1,000 kilometers, blending epic performance with long-distance touring capability. This move shows Yangwang is serious about meeting every customer’s needs as it prepares to take on the world.
