FREELANDER Concept 97 Debuts: A High-Tech Off-Roader Powered by Huawei, CATL, and Qualcomm

The FREELANDER brand has officially unveiled its first concept vehicle, the Concept 97. This new model marks a significant technological leap, featuring the Huawei Qiankun ADS 4.1 intelligent driving system as standard across the lineup, supported by an 896-line LiDAR sensor. Under the hood, the vehicle is powered by Qualcomm’s latest-generation 8397 automotive-grade chip.

The Concept 97 is built on an 800V high-voltage platform and utilizes a specialized all-terrain ‘Xiaoyao’ battery developed in partnership with CATL. Additionally, it comes standard with the i-ATS intelligent all-terrain system, co-developed with Huawei. While the Range Rover Evoque L has officially ceased production, further details regarding the FREELANDER brand are expected in June, with the production version slated for release in the second half of the year.

The FREELANDER name dates back to 1997, when Land Rover launched a vehicle designed to combine 4×4 capability with urban versatility. In 2024, Chery and Jaguar Land Rover transformed FREELANDER into an independent global brand. The brand plans to launch six new energy vehicles between 2026 and 2030, spanning range-extended, plug-in hybrid, and pure electric powertrains.

Designed by the Jaguar Land Rover Gaydon Design Center in collaboration with the Shanghai Design Hub, the Concept 97 features a signature three-tier geometric front fascia with hidden horizontal grille slats. The intelligent interactive headlights are integrated with ambient lighting that syncs with the driving environment.

The side profile retains the brand’s iconic ‘castle-like’ proportions and a flat roofline, while the rear adopts a vertical cut design, emphasizing a wide, rugged stance. The vehicle will be available in two exclusive colors: Glacier Blue and Thousand Mountain Green.

Inside, the Concept 97 is designed as a ‘mobile palace,’ featuring the classic commander-style seating position. A standout feature is the retractable Targa semi-convertible rear window. The cabin utilizes innovative, eco-friendly fabrics that blend sustainability with a high-tech aesthetic. With its deep integration of Huawei’s smart driving and cockpit solutions, the FREELANDER Concept 97 represents a bold new direction for the historic nameplate.
