MG Electrifies with Cyber X SUV and Pop-Up Headlights

MG has just pulled back the curtain on its latest electric concept SUV, the Cyber X, at the Shanghai Auto Show in China. This isn’t just another EV, it is the second model in the brand’s “Cyber” series, following in the tire tracks of the MG Cyberster which debuted in November 2023.

Design and Unique Features

The Cyber X sports a bold, boxy design, draped in a sleek matte-black finish that gives it a menacing presence. One head-turning design element that really sets this SUV apart is its pop-up headlights. They’re not just for show either. These lights emerge gracefully when in use and then retract seamlessly into the body, disappearing completely when not needed. It’s a retro-futuristic touch that adds a ton of character.

The creative genius behind the Cyber X is Jozef Kabaň, a Slovak automotive design veteran. Kabaň’s design chops are well-established, having lent his talents to powerhouses like Volkswagen, BMW, and Rolls-Royce before he started working with SAIC in April 2024, taking the reins of MG’s brand design.

From the side, the Cyber X creates a “floating roof” effect, thanks to its smoked black A- and B-pillars. The look is completed with striking silver and black two-tone five-spoke wheels. Inside, the cockpit and its connectivity features were developed in collaboration with smartphone giant Oppo, hinting at a very integrated and intuitive user experience.

MG’s Electric Expansion

MG, a brand with deep British roots but now under the ownership of China’s SAIC Motor, has not yet revealed the full technical specifications or pricing for the Cyber X. However, the whispers in the industry suggest we can expect this striking SUV to launch sometime next year.

The Cyber X is just one piece of MG’s ambitious electrification puzzle. The company plans to introduce eight new electric vehicle models over the next two years. This aggressive push will include a variety of segments, from large SUVs and sedans to sports cars. Looking specifically at 2025, MG has confirmed plans to launch two additional models alongside the Cyber X: a larger five-seater SUV and a compact electric sedan. This comes hot on the heels of the new MG4, a small hatchback that made its debut in March as MG’s first global EV. It’s slated for a Q2 launch in China, with Europe to follow later this year. The brand’s rapid growth is evident in its sales figures, with MG moving 10,000 cars in China in March alone, marking an impressive 82.6% increase from the previous year. This rapid expansion and focus on innovative design position MG as a compelling player in the ever-evolving EV landscape, especially within the dynamic Chinese market where brands like Xpeng and Leapmotor are also driving fierce competition.
