The MG brand is giving its popular MG4 EV a significant refresh for the Chinese market. It’s clear SAIC Motor, the parent company, wants to boost the car’s lackluster domestic sales while building on its strong international performance. Pre-orders for the updated MG4 start August 5, with the official launch slated for September 5.
While the previous MG4 struggled in China—selling only 13 units in February 2025, it found considerable success overseas. In the first quarter of 2025, MG Motor Europe saw a 33.5% year-over-year increase in registrations, totaling 78,505 vehicles, with the MG4 being a major growth driver. The UK alone contributed over 40,000 MG4 sales since launch. This global demand fuels MG’s ambitious plan to roll out 13 new electrified models worldwide over the next two years, backed by an impressive 100 billion yuan (about 14 billion USD) investment. The MG4 remains a cornerstone of this strategy, especially in key markets like Europe, India, and Southeast Asia where compact EVs are gaining serious traction.
What’s New with the MG4 EV?
The updated MG4 EV arrives with a slightly bigger footprint, now measuring 4,395 mm long, 1,842 mm wide, and 1,551 mm tall, all riding on a 2,750 mm wheelbase. Under the hood, it retains a rear-mounted 120 kW permanent magnet motor. Powering this is a lithium-iron-phosphate (LFP) battery pack from Rept Battery Energy. While specific battery capacity and range figures are still under wraps, the top speed is rated at 160 km/h. Intriguingly, MG’s brand director Chen Cui hinted that this model might be among the first to feature a semi-solid-state battery as standard, which could be a significant leap for mainstream EV technology.
Tech-Forward Cockpit and Design Tweaks
Inside, the new MG4 boasts a cockpit system co-developed with Oppo, promising seamless smartphone integration. This system supports mirroring, voice commands, and gesture-based navigation, designed to work effortlessly across Oppo, Huawei, and Apple devices. MG is keen to emphasize that drivers won’t need to download or update apps directly on the vehicle, simplifying the user experience.
Visually, the refreshed MG4 sports a sleeker, closed front grille, new arrow-style taillights, and a full-width rear light bar—a popular design trend in today’s EV landscape. Traditional door handles and 17-inch alloy wheels carry over, and the charging port stays conveniently on the left front fender. The vehicle continues to utilize SAIC’s robust Nebula EV platform, a flexible architecture designed to underpin a variety of electric models.
Ultimately, the updated MG4 EV looks to leverage its newfound overseas success to make a stronger statement in its home market. With an expanded body, promising battery tech, and an upgraded smart cockpit, the new MG4 could be the compelling package SAIC needs to accelerate its electrified future in China and beyond. The competition in China’s EV market is fierce, with manufacturers like XPeng, Leapmotor, and Xiaomi Auto constantly innovating, but MG clearly aims to carve out a significant share with this revamped offering. Keep an eye on its domestic launch this September, as it could mark a pivotal moment for the brand. China’s NEV market is always one to watch, and SAIC is clearly doubling down.
