SAIC Motor has officially kicked off mass production for the updated MG4 electric hatchback, with the first units now rolling off the line at its Nanjing factory. The all-new MG4 is ready to make waves, and its official debut is slated for August, when we’ll get the full scoop on specs and pricing.
A Sharper Look and a Bigger Footprint
The new MG4 isn’t just a minor facelift. It’s been redesigned with fresh styling, updated tech, and new dimensions that give it a more commanding presence. It’s grown in size, now measuring 4,395 mm long, 1,842 mm wide, and 1,551 mm tall, with a wheelbase stretched to 2,750 mm. That’s a noticeable increase from the outgoing model’s 4,287 mm length and 2,705 mm wheelbase.
So, what does this mean for you? The added length should translate directly into more cabin and cargo space, making it a more practical choice for daily driving and weekend trips. This strategic upsizing positions the MG4 to compete more aggressively with popular rivals like the BYD Dolphin.
The styling gets a dose of inspiration from MG’s stunning Cyberster electric roadster. The front end is more sculpted, featuring separated headlamp units and a new illuminated emblem that adds a touch of modern flair. Its wide-body stance and short overhangs shout stability and give it a planted, energetic vibe that’s hard to ignore. To complement the new look, MG is introducing two eye-catching paint options, Donglai Purple and Qingbo Green, both using pearlescent pigments to create dynamic, shifting colors.
Under the Skin
While the looks are new, the powertrain will feel familiar to fans of the original. Regulatory filings point to a 120 kW rear-mounted electric motor, sticking with a nimble rear-wheel-drive setup. The suspension also remains a proven combination of MacPherson struts at the front and a five-link independent system at the rear. This layout is a sweet spot for many drivers, offering a great balance of sharp handling and a comfortable ride. It’s a setup that suggests the new MG4 EV will be just as fun to toss around corners as its predecessor.
Smarter and More Connected
Inside, the biggest news is the debut of the MG×Oppo cockpit system. It’s a smart move in a market where tech integration is king. Co-developed with the electronics giant Oppo, this platform aims to seamlessly merge your smartphone with the car’s interface. MG says the system will support voice commands, phone app synchronization, and even gesture-based navigation, all designed to make your drive smoother and less distracting.
The big question mark remains the battery. An MG brand director dropped a tantalizing hint about a potential semi-solid-state battery that could deliver an incredible 800 kilometers of range on the CLTC cycle. However, SAIC has yet to confirm any official battery specs or range figures. If this rumor pans out, it would significantly raise the bar in the competitive Chinese market. We’ll be watching closely for the official announcement in August.
