Voyah, Dongfeng Motor’s premium electric vehicle brand, is gearing up to launch its new flagship SUV, the Taishan, in the fourth quarter of this year. This “new-era flagship SUV,” as Voyah calls it, promises to deliver a blend of luxury, performance, and cutting-edge autonomous driving technology, thanks to its collaboration with Huawei.
The Brains Behind the Drive
The Taishan is set to feature Huawei’s Qiankun ADS 4.0 Ultra four-lidar solution, enabling Level 3 conditional autonomous driving capabilities. This advanced system underscores the growing trend of Chinese automakers integrating sophisticated local technology into their vehicles. Complementing this is an 800V high-voltage system, hinting at rapid charging capabilities and robust power delivery.
Voyah’s CEO, Lu Fang, previously confirmed that the Taishan underwent extensive summer testing in Xinjiang, China, focusing on its intelligent assisted driving and smart cockpit features in collaboration with Huawei. This partnership positions the Taishan to directly compete with other tech-forward vehicles in the market, utilizing Huawei-backed brands and their advanced systems.
Design and Dimensions: A Commanding Presence
Positioned as a full-size six-seater SUV, the Voyah Taishan boasts significant road presence with a length of approximately 5.3 meters and a wheelbase of about 3.1 meters. These dimensions suggest a spacious and comfortable interior, ideal for families or those prioritizing passenger room and cargo capacity.
The exterior design proudly displays Voyah’s family aesthetic, drawing parallels to the Voyah Passion L. Up front, a prominent vertical square grille is flanked by two smaller air vents, with sleek, slender headlights completing the look. A distinctive feature is the lidar unit mounted on the front roof, a clear indicator of its advanced autonomous driving ambitions. The rear showcases modern through-type taillights, while the side profile is accentuated by semi-hidden door handles and stylish multi-spoke rims.
Power and Performance: Electrifying Options
Underpinning the Taishan is Dongfeng’s self-developed Tianyuan Architecture, featuring a vehicle control platform powered by Huawei’s Qiankun automotive control modules. This integrated approach highlights the deep collaboration between Voyah and Huawei.
While full interior details and powertrain specifications are still under wraps, sources suggest the Taishan will likely be available in both Battery Electric Vehicle (BEV) and Plug-in Hybrid Electric Vehicle (PHEV) variants. The BEV model is expected to pack a serious punch, with a dual-motor, four-wheel-drive system delivering a combined output of 500 kW (671 hp). This kind of power translates to exhilarating performance, with a projected 0 to 100 km/h acceleration time of under 4 seconds. Paired with a large-capacity battery, the BEV is estimated to offer a CLTC range of 700 km, making it a compelling option for long-distance travel.
Expect the Voyah Taishan to shake up the full-size SUV segment, offering a luxurious, tech-laden, and powerful alternative for discerning buyers. Its combination of Huawei’s advanced ADAS and robust powertrain options sets it up as a formidable contender in China’s rapidly evolving EV landscape.
