Spied: GWM Developing Long-Wheelbase Tank 700 Flagship SUV

Spy shots of a long-wheelbase version of the Tank 700 have surfaced, suggesting that GWM is looking to expand its flagship SUV lineup. With the Tank 800 still notably absent from the market, this extended model appears poised to fill the gap for a larger, more premium offering. For context, the Tank 300’s assembly line debut earlier marked the brand’s growing SUV portfolio.

The front fascia of the test mule remains identical to the current Tank 700, featuring the same bold, sporty black grille that has become a signature of the brand’s design language.

The most significant changes are found in the profile. The bodywork behind the C-pillar has been noticeably stretched, and the rear wheels have been repositioned further back to accommodate a longer wheelbase. While the rear door size remains consistent with the standard model, the current proportions look somewhat unconventional, indicating that this is an early-stage engineering prototype rather than a final production design.

At the rear, the design mirrors the standard Tank 700, highlighted by a prominent roof spoiler that adds a touch of aggression while aiding aerodynamics.

Inside, the cabin retains the familiar layout of the current Tank 700, including the center console configuration. Although the test vehicle currently maintains a five-seat layout, the extended body creates a significantly larger cargo area. It is highly likely that the production version will feature a three-row seating configuration, enhancing versatility for long-distance travel and family use.

The chassis setup includes an air suspension system, consistent with the standard model. Under the hood, speculation points to GWM’s proprietary 4.0T V8 twin-turbo engine paired with a plug-in hybrid system. This powertrain is expected to deliver a massive 782 horsepower and 1,000 Nm of torque, providing more than enough muscle to handle the increased size and weight of this flagship SUV. For additional powertrain details, see the Tank 700 Hi4-T limited edition.

For reference, the current Tank 700 is priced between 428,000 and 508,000 RMB (approximately $59,000 – $70,000 USD).
