Based on the data released so far, most automakers saw a rebound in sales in May, gradually emerging from the off-season that began at the start of the year.

BYD sold 383,453 new energy vehicles (NEVs) in May, marking a slight increase of 0.26% compared to the same period last year. Compared to April, the company’s sales saw a significant month-on-month increase of 19.41%.
Its domestic sales in May totaled 222,809 units, a 24.07% year-on-year decrease. However, this figure represents a 19.77% increase from March.
BYD’s overseas sales in May reached a record 160,644 units, surging 80.40% year-on-year.
Geely Auto (HKEX: 0175) reported total sales of 237,637 units in May, marking a slight increase of 1.03% year-on-year and a 1.05% increase from April.
Exports continued to be Geely Auto’s biggest growth driver. The company sold a record 85,144 vehicles overseas in May, a massive year-on-year surge of 183.65%.
Its performance in the domestic market was lackluster. Geely Auto’s domestic sales in May totaled 152,493 units, down 25.68% from the same period last year.
GWM (HKEX: 2333) sold 100,399 vehicles in May, a decrease of 1.79% year-on-year and a decline of 5.56% from April.
Overseas markets remain GWM’s most important growth engine. In May, overseas sales accounted for more than half of total sales.
The automaker sold a total of 50,688 vehicles overseas in May, achieving a 46.77% year-on-year increase and a slight 0.42% rise from the previous month.
GWM’s sales in the domestic Chinese market totaled 49,711 units in May, down 26.57% year-on-year and 10.97% from April.
Nio Inc (NYSE: NIO) delivered 37,705 vehicles in May, marking a new high for the year.
This strong monthly delivery figure represents a 62.3% increase year-on-year and a 28.44% month-on-month increase from April.
This was primarily driven by continued strong deliveries of the ES8 SUV under Nio’s main brand, with 11,475 units delivered in May; the new L80 SUV from the Onvo sub-brand delivered 5,949 units in its first half-month on the market.
Xpeng (NYSE: XPEV) saw its deliveries continue to decline year-on-year last month, mainly because the new GX SUV has yet to contribute significantly.
The company delivered 32,158 vehicles in May, a 4.08% year-on-year decline, marking the fifth consecutive month of year-on-year declines in monthly deliveries. However, this represents a 3.70% month-on-month increase compared to April.
The company officially launched the GX SUV on May 20 and began deliveries on May 26, though large-scale deliveries are expected to take place this month.
Li Auto (NASDAQ: LI) delivered a total of 33,350 vehicles in May, marking an 18.37% year-on-year decline and a slight 2.16% drop compared to April.
In the first five months of this year, Li Auto delivered a cumulative total of 162,577 vehicles, down 3.03% year-on-year.
In May, Li Auto officially launched and began delivering the updated version of its flagship model, the Li L9, marking the start of an upgrade for its L-series extended-range SUV lineup.
The company will host a technology showcase in June to demonstrate its technical capabilities in areas such as in-car interaction, foundational models, driver assistance, and in-house developed chips. Subsequently, it will launch the all-new five-seat flagship SUV, the Li L8, in late June.
Leapmotor (HKEX: 9863) delivered a total of 81,569 new vehicles in May, once again setting a new monthly delivery record.
This represents an 80.99% increase compared to the same period last year and a 14.26% increase compared to April.
The company’s new models this year include the A10 compact SUV, which was launched on March 26, and the D19 full-size SUV, which was launched on April 16.
Zeekr delivered a total of 34,377 vehicles in May, representing an 81.81% increase year-on-year and an 8.15% increase month-on-month.
The higher-priced Zeekr 9 Series and 8 Series models accounted for nearly 50% of total deliveries in May.
The strong performance in May drove Zeekr’s total deliveries for the first five months of the year to 143,201 units, a year-on-year increase of 93.42%.
Xiaomi EV said that its May deliveries continued to exceed 30,000 units. In line with its usual practice, the company did not provide a specific figure. Detailed May delivery data is expected to be available later this month in the China Passenger Car Association (CPCA) monthly report.
Xiaomi EV delivered a total of 36,702 vehicles in April. The new-generation SU7 sedan accounted for over 70% of this total, while the YU7 SUV made up the remainder of sales.
The Huawei-backed HIMA (Harmony Intelligent Mobility Alliance) business delivered 46,122 vehicles in May, marking a 3.77% year-on-year increase and a 40.79% month-on-month rise.
This marks the second consecutive month of month-on-month delivery growth for the business, following a 23.17% increase in April.
Under the HIMA initiative, Huawei has partnered with local automakers to launch five new brands: Stelato (BAIC Group), Aito (Seres Group), Luxeed (Chery), Maextro (Anhui Jianghuai Automobile Group, JAC), and Shangjie (SAIC Motor).
The alliance recorded cumulative deliveries of about 192,000 units from January to May this year, representing a 26.5% increase compared to the same period last year.
Aito, the brand jointly developed by Huawei and Seres, delivered 34,320 vehicles in May, marking a 48.2% increase from the previous month.
Aito’s cumulative deliveries from January through May rose 28.7% year-on-year, it said, without providing specific figures.
SAIC-GM-Wuling reported total sales of 126,087 units in May, including 74,178 NEVs and 30,090 units sold overseas.
The company highlighted that the Huajing S, developed in collaboration with Huawei, officially launched on May 8 and delivered 3,603 units in its first three weeks.
Voyah (HKEX: 7489) delivered 13,003 vehicles in May, representing a year-on-year increase of 29.74% but a 14.15% decrease from April.
From January through May, Voyah delivered 62,041 vehicles, marking a year-on-year increase of 34.65%.
IM Motors, the electric vehicle (EV) division of SAIC Motor (SSE: 600104), delivered 10,023 vehicles in May.
IM Motors said that its cumulative deliveries from January through May rose 115% year-on-year, though it did not provide specific figures.
