Xpeng Gives its P7+ Sedan a Range-Extender Boost

Xpeng’s P7+ sedan is already a certified hit in China, but the company isn’t resting on its laurels. Instead, it’s broadening the car’s appeal by introducing a range-extender (EREV) variant, a smart move designed to win over drivers who aren’t quite ready to commit to a pure electric vehicle.

The fully electric P7+ has been a dominant force in the 150,000 to 200,000 yuan ($21,000 to $28,100) segment, topping the sales charts for ten consecutive months. With over 77,000 units delivered by the end of September, it’s clear that buyers love its blend of style and performance. Now, Xpeng is adding a new flavor to the lineup.

More Power, Less Anxiety

So, what’s an EREV? Think of it as an EV with a built-in generator. The wheels are always driven by a potent 180 kW (241 hp) electric motor, giving you that instant torque and smooth acceleration that makes EVs so fun to drive. When the battery runs low, a 1.5T engine with 110 kW (148 hp) kicks in, not to power the car, but to recharge the lithium iron phosphate battery on the go. This setup eliminates range anxiety, a major hurdle for many potential EV buyers. While we’re still waiting on official battery capacity and range specs, the P7+ EREV is rated for a top speed of 200 km/h.

Subtle Clues Signal a New Powertrain

Visually, the EREV keeps the sleek, familiar design of its all-electric sibling. The front end remains clean with its signature through-type light strip, but the lower grille is slightly larger to help cool the range-extender engine. It’s a functional change that’s subtle enough not to disrupt the car’s handsome looks. The grille can even open and close automatically as needed.

Around back, you’ll find new “POWER” and “ULTRA” badges. “POWER” signals the presence of the EREV system, while “ULTRA” is expected to highlight the three Turing AI chips self-developed by Xpeng, a nod to the brand’s tech-forward identity. This is particularly interesting given the recent partnership between Volkswagen and Xpeng, which aims to leverage Xpeng’s advanced EV technology.

The car is slightly longer than the BEV, measuring 5071 mm, and rides on new 19-inch or 20-inch wheels, giving it a solid stance.

A Strategic Move in a Competitive Market

Adding an EREV option is a calculated decision in the incredibly competitive Chinese market. It allows Xpeng to compete directly with other brands that have found success with range-extender technology. By keeping what everyone loves about the P7+ and adding a powertrain that offers greater flexibility, Xpeng is poised to attract an even wider audience and continue its impressive sales momentum.
