Voyah Taishan 8 PHEV SUV Revealed: A Powerhouse with Up to 657 HP

The wraps are off the Voyah Taishan 8, a five-seater plug-in hybrid SUV that promises a blend of power, luxury, and technology. Freshly unveiled by China’s MIIT, this latest addition to Voyah’s Taishan series boasts a dual-motor powertrain, a top speed pushing 200 km/h, and an array of features that make it a serious contender in the competitive Chinese EV market.

Power and Performance

The Taishan 8 is all about choices, offering two distinct power versions to suit different drivers. The low-power variant features a robust 150 kW and 215 kW electric motor setup, delivering a combined 288 horsepower. It draws its energy from a lithium iron phosphate battery supplied by Xinwangda, tipping the scales with a curb weight of 2,765 kg.

For those craving more thrill, the high-power version steps it up with 150 kW (201 hp) and 230 kW (308 hp) electric motors. This beast is fueled by a ternary lithium battery from a CATL-FAW joint venture. Depending on your preference for grip and style, you can spec it with either 21-inch or 22-inch tires, resulting in curb weights of 2,790 kg and 2,815 kg respectively. Fuel economy is impressive for both, with WLTC figures of 0.34L/100km and 0.38L/100km. Both versions share a brisk top speed of 200 km/h, though details on battery capacity and cruising range are still under wraps.

Design and Features

Visually, the Taishan 8 carries Voyah’s signature waterfall-style grille up front, giving it an unmistakable presence. A roof-mounted lidar unit hints at advanced driver-assistance capabilities, while semi-hidden door handles add a touch of modern sleekness. Around the back, the “VOYAH” logo is elegantly integrated within the taillight clusters, maintaining the brand’s sophisticated aesthetic.

Inside, while full details are yet to be revealed, it is highly likely that the Voyah Taishan 8 will inherit many of the premium features seen in its sibling. Its predecessor, launched just last month, set a high bar with Huawei’s Qiankun ADS 4.0 advanced driving assistance system, HarmonyOS Cockpit 5.0, 5C fast-charging, 22-way electrically adjustable zero-gravity seats, and a mind-blowing 32-speaker audio system. It was also the first Chinese vehicle to feature a three-chamber air suspension system with Electronic Damper Control and 16° bidirectional independent rear-wheel steering, showing Voyah’s commitment to cutting-edge technology and comfort.

Optional configurations for the Taishan 8 include electric side steps, side radar, various rim designs, different door handle styles, and a custom tail badge, allowing for a degree of personalization.

Market Positioning and Competition

The Voyah Taishan 8 is slightly smaller than its six-seater sibling, measuring 5200/2025/1814 mm (l/w/h) with a 3090 mm wheelbase, compared to the larger model’s 5230/2025/1817 mm and 3120 mm wheelbase. This positions the Taishan 8 as a more agile yet still spacious five-seater option.

Voyah is making serious moves in the market, having recently launched its flagship six-seater PHEV SUV at a price point between 379,900 and 459,900 yuan (53,200 to 65,000 USD). This aggressive pricing, coupled with advanced features, pits Voyah directly against established players and new entrants alike. Firms like Changan and BYD are also pushing boundaries with their offerings, making the Chinese EV scene one of the most dynamic globally.

As Chinese EV makers continue to innovate at a rapid pace, the Voyah Taishan 8 looks set to capture attention with its powerful hybrid system, tech-laden interior, and a design that means business.
