CATL’s Bold Move: Battery Swapping for Trucks in Europe

Ever thought about swapping out a battery in your electric truck as easily as refueling a diesel engine? That’s exactly what CATL, the world’s leading power battery maker, aims to do in Europe. They’re partnering with Octopus Energy, the UK’s largest household energy supplier, to bring battery swapping to electric heavy trucks.

The idea is simple yet ambitious: build a network of battery swap stations across the UK by 2035. The first stations are set to open in 2027, focusing on major highways and logistics hubs. This could serve over 300,000 electric trucks and attract more than £30 billion in private investment.

Metric Value Notes
Initial Swap Stations 2027 Focus on highways and ports
Network Coverage Goal 2035 Over 30 stations
Trucks Served 300,000+ Electric models
Private Investment £30B+ Projected by completion
Battery Swap Time Minutes Vs. nearly an hour for fast charging

Why bother with swapping? It boils down to cost. Swapping a battery can be quicker and cheaper than fast charging, cutting the time from nearly an hour to just minutes. Plus, without needing to buy a battery outright, the upfront cost of electric trucks drops significantly.

Greg Jackson, founder of Octopus Energy, believes that even if diesel prices dip, swapping will remain competitive. “With battery swapping, we’ll be cheaper than diesel is today,” he said.

What’s intriguing is that the swap stations won’t be owned by CATL or Octopus. Instead, truck manufacturers and fleet managers will take the reins, with governments likely to treat these stations as critical infrastructure.

This isn’t CATL’s first dance with battery swapping. Over in China, they’re aggressively expanding their network, planning up to 900 stations this year alone. By 2030, they aim to cover 80% of China’s core logistics routes.

China’s government is also backing this push, targeting 1.6 million new energy heavy trucks by 2030. And CATL’s confident that by 2028, half of China’s heavy-truck market will be electric.

So, should you care? If you’re in the logistics game, especially in Europe, this could be a game-changer. The cost benefits are clear, and with the infrastructure set to grow, the appeal of electric trucks will only rise.
