The Australian automotive market is undergoing a significant transformation, as the latest data for April 2026 reveals a sharp decline in traditional internal combustion engine (ICE) vehicle sales, contrasted by a surge in electric vehicle (EV) adoption and the rising influence of Chinese automakers.
Total new vehicle sales in Australia reached 92,591 units in April, marking a 2.2% year-on-year increase. Notably, battery electric vehicles (BEVs) accounted for 15,185 of those sales, representing a record-breaking 16.4% market share—meaning roughly one in every six new cars sold is now fully electric.
Conversely, the traditional fuel-powered segment is facing a steep downturn. Gasoline vehicle sales plummeted by 30.1% year-on-year, while diesel vehicle sales fell by 21.7%. Industry analysts point to a combination of government incentives for EVs and supply chain disruptions affecting crude oil, which have led to rising fuel prices and sporadic shortages, as primary drivers for the cooling demand for ICE vehicles.
In terms of specific models, the BYD Sealion 07 emerged as the top-selling electric vehicle for the month, recording 1,780 units. While the Tesla Model Y saw a massive 193.6% year-on-year increase, its sales volume still trailed the Sealion 07 by nearly 1,000 units. Overall, the BYD brand moved 7,702 vehicles, solidifying its position as the second-best-selling brand in the country. Other Chinese models, including the Geely Galaxy EX5 and the Zeekr 7X, also delivered impressive performances. In the sedan segment, the Tesla Model 3 recorded 403 sales, followed closely by the BYD Seal with 370 units.
The brand rankings have seen a major shake-up. Despite a 21.6% drop in sales, Toyota maintained its lead with 15,185 units. BYD’s ascent to second place displaced Ford and Mazda, which have slipped to fifth and sixth, respectively. Kia and Hyundai currently hold the third and fourth spots. In the individual model rankings, the Ford Ranger remains the second best-selling vehicle, trailing only the Toyota RAV4.
