China-Exclusive BMW i3 Long Wheelbase Debuts: 620-Mile Range and Neue Klasse Tech

On April 22, ahead of the 2026 Beijing Auto Show, the all-new BMW i3 Long Wheelbase (LWB) made its official debut. This China-exclusive model is expected to be a major highlight at the BMW booth during the upcoming show. Built on the next-generation “Neue Klasse” (NK) platform, the vehicle boasts a wheelbase exceeding 3 meters (approx. 118 inches) and a CLTC pure electric range of over 1,000 kilometers (approx. 621 miles). It features cutting-edge technologies, including a centralized driving control system, the Panoramic iDrive interface, and BMW’s sixth-generation electric drive system.

### Exterior Design: Digital Innovation Meets Heritage

The all-new BMW i3 LWB introduces several exclusive design elements. The iconic kidney grille has been innovatively merged with the redesigned “four-eye” headlights to create the “Digital Angel Wings”—a striking visual signature. Sensors like radar and cameras are discreetly hidden behind the integrated light units, maintaining a clean aesthetic while providing robust support for intelligent driving assistance. The sculpted hood features a “peak and valley” design that emphasizes a sense of forward motion, staying true to BMW’s sporty DNA.

From the side, the vehicle maintains BMW’s classic proportions: short front overhangs and a long wheelbase, paired with a sleek fastback roofline and wide fenders. The waistline sweeps upward, blending seamlessly with the rear roofline. The legendary Hofmeister kink—a BMW hallmark since 1961—is preserved and enhanced with high-gloss black trim. Exclusive to the Chinese market are new semi-hidden door handles and an illuminated M logo on the C-pillar. For the first time on a China-made model, the Isle of Man Green paint, typically reserved for high-performance M models, is available.

The rear of the vehicle continues the minimalist theme with horizontal L-shaped light strips. These extend from the central logo toward the sides, creating a sharp lighting effect that mirrors the “7-shaped” daytime running lights at the front. This design reinforces the car’s wide-body stance. Notably, BMW continues its commitment to sustainability, using recycled materials for the wheels, front bumper, and various suspension components.

### Interior: A Driver-Centric Digital Sanctuary

Inside, the cabin remains focused on the driver, featuring a sophisticated white and gray color scheme. The cockpit is dominated by the Panoramic iDrive system, which includes a 17.9-inch borderless central touchscreen. This is complemented by a massive 43.3-inch “Horizon” panoramic display system, a 3D Head-Up Display (HUD), and an exclusive multi-function steering wheel. Premium amenities include three-zone automatic climate control, electrically adjustable multi-function seats, and a Harman Kardon premium audio system.

### Performance and Charging

The all-new BMW i3 utilizes an 800V high-voltage architecture. The i3 50 xDrive variant features a dual-motor all-wheel-drive system powered by the sixth-generation eDrive technology. This setup delivers a maximum output of 345 kW (469 hp) and a peak torque of 645 Nm. With a 108 kWh battery pack, the WLTP range for the overseas version is estimated at up to 900 km (approx. 559 miles). The 800V system supports 400 kW ultra-fast charging, capable of adding 400 km (approx. 248 miles) of range in just 10 minutes. Additionally, the vehicle features a precision-controlled motor system for seamless, “jerk-free” stopping.

### Market Outlook

The BMW i3 has been a milestone in the brand’s electrification journey. From its debut as a carbon-fiber city car in 2013 to the current China-exclusive sedan based on the CLAR platform, the i3 has evolved significantly. The 2026 model (codename NA0) represents a leap forward by adopting the dedicated Neue Klasse platform.

While the current i3 enjoyed a relatively open market when it launched in 2022, the new LWB version enters a fiercely competitive “Red Ocean” in China. It faces stiff competition from domestic NEV brands and startups in the 200,000 to 400,000 RMB ($28,000 to $56,000) price range. This new generation is BMW’s high-stakes answer to the intensifying technological and price wars in the world’s largest EV market.
