No More Rest Stop Stress? SERES Patents a Hidden In-Car Toilet for Traffic Jams

To address the urgent needs of travelers during long holidays or heavy traffic, SERES has recently filed a patent for a “hidden in-car toilet.” This clever design integrates a restroom facility beneath the front passenger seat, offering a novel solution to one of the most awkward challenges of long-distance road trips.

The hidden toilet utilizes a drawer-style sliding rail structure, which can be pulled out manually or deployed via voice command. To manage hygiene and odors, the patent includes a dedicated fan exhaust system that vents smells outside the vehicle. Furthermore, it features a heating element designed to dry solid waste and evaporate liquids, with the remaining waste stored in a removable tank that requires manual emptying.

It is important to note that this design is not intended for use while the vehicle is in motion. Instead, it is specifically designed for stationary scenarios—such as hours-long traffic gridlock, remote campsites, overnight stops, or when faced with massive queues at highway service areas.

Compared to previous simple solutions, such as Roborock’s central armrest storage box modified with a plastic toilet seat, SERES’s design is significantly more sophisticated. As the Chinese automotive market becomes increasingly competitive, manufacturers are moving beyond massage seats and on-board refrigerators to find new ways to differentiate their products. In-car sanitary facilities could very well be the next frontier in this “amenities war.”

However, mass production of this patent remains a distant prospect. Beyond technical hurdles like pipe sealing and long-term durability, there is the significant challenge of consumer acceptance—overcoming the psychological barrier of using a toilet in such close quarters within a vehicle. Like many patents, this may serve primarily as a technical reserve or intellectual property protection, and its eventual implementation in production vehicles remains to be seen.
