Nio ES9 Spyshots: A Giant EV SUV is Coming

The automotive world is buzzing as Nio’s upcoming flagship, the ES9, was recently spotted in China, dwarfing even its impressively sized sibling, the Nio ES8. This new, colossal electric SUV is slated for an official launch in the first half of 2026, though rumors hint at an unveiling as early as late 2025.

Nio, known for its premium electric vehicles, is positioning the ES9 at the pinnacle of its lineup. Think of it as the SUV counterpart to the luxurious ET9 sedan, a vehicle that already challenges the likes of Mercedes-Maybach in China. The ES9 won’t just be a contender against global premium brands like the Mercedes-Maybach EQS SUV, but it is also set to take on formidable domestic rivals, such as BYD’s impressive Yangwang U8L.

Massive Dimensions and Advanced Tech

While official specifications for the Nio ES9 remain under wraps, spy shots paint a clear picture: this EV will be truly massive. We are looking at an estimated length of around 5.5 meters, making it a behemoth on wheels. It also appears wider and significantly taller than the ES8, with an estimated width of 2.05 meters and a height exceeding 1.9 meters.

To put that into perspective, the Nio ES8, currently China’s largest all-electric SUV, measures 5280 mm in length, 2010 mm in width, and 1800 mm in height, with a wheelbase of 3130 mm. The ES9’s dimensions will put it in direct competition with the plug-in hybrid Yangwang U8L, which boasts dimensions of 5400/2049/1921 mm and a wheelbase of 3250 mm.

Underneath its imposing exterior, the ES9 is expected to incorporate some serious tech. It’s likely to feature the active SkyRide suspension, a system already showcased in the ET9. Furthermore, anticipate steer-by-wire technology, which completely removes the physical steering column for a digitally controlled, electronically transmitted steering system. This setup promises precise handling and opens up possibilities for more advanced driver-assistance features. Interior-wise, the ES9 will offer flexible seating configurations, with both 6 and 7-seater layouts expected.

Nio’s Market Performance and Future Outlook

Nio Group delivered a total of 34,749 vehicles in September, marking a 64% increase year-over-year. While the Nio brand itself contributed 13,728 cars, a 33% decrease from last year, the overall group growth was largely fueled by its entry-level brand, Onvo, and its recently launched full-size SUV, the L90. The updated ES8, which debuted on September 20 at Nio Day, saw deliveries commence immediately in China and is reportedly sold out until March, according to data from the Nio app. This strong performance indicates a solid demand for Nio’s offerings, particularly with the new additions to its portfolio. With the ES9 on the horizon, Nio is clearly gearing up to solidify its position in the premium EV market.

This move by Nio highlights the intense competition and rapid innovation in the Chinese EV landscape. Brands are constantly pushing boundaries in terms of size, luxury, and technological sophistication. The ES9 is not just another SUV, it is a statement of intent, showcasing Nio’s ambition to lead the pack with vehicles that are both grand in scale and rich in cutting-edge features. This is a market where traditional automakers are facing fierce competition from homegrown brands that are quickly defining the future of electric mobility. As we head towards 2026, all eyes will be on Nio to see if the ES9 lives up to its monumental promise.
